Let's Begin

Hey everyone! For this week we will be sharing our workflow of how we export our rhino files to the Decentraland builder. Here is a short step by step summary: We start out in Rhino and export our model as a (.fbx) file→ We import the (.fbx) file to blender and apply materials to the layers or adjust the original materials we have in the (.fbx) file. →  We then export the file as a (.glb) file and import that file into the decentraland builder. You can also reference last weeks post on how to import the (.glb) file into the builder and onto your parcel. Please feel free to reach out to use if you need any help!

Exporting

Exporting from rhino to blender is really straight forward- The layers will still maintain and the materials applied to the objects will maintain their hierarchy ( i.e if an object is in a layer that has a material, but has a custom material set to the object. The custom material will also be transferred to blender).

When you export as fbx you can choose different mesh counts depending on how complex your  geometry is. In our example we use less mesh counts because our geometry is pretty simple. Importing

After you export the file from rhino, you can import the fbx file into blender. To apply materials you can either select materials by the materials you had in rhino or by the layers- blender will group all the layers together in a tab.

Import FBX file

To apply materials first you need to select the objects together and then link them together before you apply materials. Once you link them all the materials linked would have the same materials.

You can adjust the materials either through  Shading tab and the UV editing tab.

If you want animations you can use the timeline below, but from my experience it is hard to have multiple animations in an exported GLB scene, so I usually just stick to one animation, and animate the rest in the decentraland builder - we will go through how to make animations in the decentraland builder some other week.

Once you have all the materials you want and animations you want you go to export and export as a (.glb) file with the y axis as vertical.

Then you can import the (.glb) file as an asset in the decentraland builder!

As always thanks a lot for reading! Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions! Also let us know if you want us to help design your parcel.
